    Fellow Democrats,

If you’re like me, you’ve been watching the latest political news with a mixture of disbelief, frustration, and (most importantly) the urge to DO SOMETHING!

Well, I have some exciting news: The Washington State Democrats have partnered with the National Democratic Training Committee (NDTC) to offer a free, in-person training in Seattle on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Over the course of the day, you and fellow Democrats from across Washington State will receive instruction from the NDTC’s professional training staff in the essential elements of campaigning, including fundraising, messaging, digital communications, and voter contact strategy and tactics.

CLICK HERE TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT

The NDTC’s Blue Bench training program has three available tracks, so no matter your experience or role, this training is for you (and all of your Democrat friends)! Want to build your local party organization? There’s a track for that. Considering a run for office? There’s a track for that. Want to learn skills to volunteer or work for a campaign? You better believe there’s a track for that, too!

    Here are the details:

NDTC Blue Bench Training: Seattle, Washington

    When: Saturday, October 19

    Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

Where: Seattle Machinist Hall, 9125 15th Place S, Seattle, WA 98108

Cost: FREE (and lunch is included)!

How do I sign up?: Register here!

Want to know more? You can read all about the tracks and training topics in the PDF below, or just click on these names to learn more about the WA Dems and the NDTC.

I sincerely hope that you will be able to join me and fellow Democrats from around Washington for this special event! Want to bring a friend? Feel free to forward this email to them - anyone interested in Democratic action is invited! And, you can help spread the word to Democratic circles in your community by sharing the Facebook event.

    See you there!

Friday, September 20, 2019 children around the world will Strike for the Climate.

23rd Legislative District Democrats 2018 Platform

VI. ENVIRONMENT – We believe that a new energy policy, focused on self-sufficiency and the reduction of pollution, is vital to our nation’s security and continued economic well-being. We believe in a pragmatic, science-based evaluation of the causes and outcomes of climate change. We support the expansion of renewable energy sources including, but not limited to solar and wind. We support the conservation of our groundwater resources and the creation of policies that promote low-impact development, water reuse, water reclamation, and aquifer protection.

We believe in support and enactment of responsible international and domestic environmental laws and their vigorous enforcement…

These are words from our Democratic Party Platform. We think you will agree that they haven’t moved us to action. Our children have noticed and have decided to take action on their own.

These are the words of sixteen year old climate activist Greta Thunberg. In August 2018, at the age of 15, Thunberg took time off school to demonstrate outside the Swedish parliament holding up a sign calling for bold climate action. Her "school strike for the climate" began attracting media attention and other students then engaged in similar protests in their own communities. In her words:

“This is where people usually start talking about hope, solar panels, wind power, circular economy, and so on, but I'm not going to do that. We've had 30 years of pep-talking and selling positive ideas. And I'm sorry, but it doesn't work. Because if it would have, the emissions would have gone down by now. They haven't. And yes, we do need hope, of course we do. But the one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.”

“So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come.”

Our children can’t vote for Climate Action, as we can, but they can Strike to Save the Planet and hope we come with them!

In a vote of the board, the 23rd Legislative District Democrats Executive Board asks that the Membership of the Central Committee of the 23rd LD Democrats support the children of the world in their mission. This is only a request since an official action would take a vote of the Membership, and since the strike is scheduled a week ahead of our next meeting, we can only advise and request. The 23rd LD Salmon Dinner committee has a problem - more diners than desserts.

We are attracting a ABOUT 30% more people than last year, that is the good news. The bad news is we need a dessert for every table. We expect the desserts to go for about $100 each. We desperately need 9 more PLEASE PLEASE sign up even if you don't bake. Bakery is fine, but no box of costco cookies. We want to make money on the dessert auction. Looking delicious sells.  For those who have already committed, thanks so much.  For those who have not, respond to this with your name, phone number and email address. We will be back in touch.

OLYMPIA – Sen. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge Island, received the Washington State Parent Teacher Association’s highest honor at the organization’s annual conference in Vancouver in May 2018.

Rolfes was the recipient of the 2018 Friend of Children Award, which recognizes an individual or organization for state-level dedication “to all children” in Washington State by supporting the whole child through advocacy, education, family and community engagement, health and
    well-being, and safety.

“This award is extremely meaningful for me as a Mom and a legislator, especially coming from an organization that supports crucial volunteer work at home and advocacy at the state level,” Rolfes said.

Rolfes has become a leading voice on education funding and reform over the past decade, working toward bipartisan solutions to improve outcomes for all public school students around the state. Rolfes is the vice
chair of the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee and chairs the Senate Ways & Means Committee.
